Welcome
Welcome to Churchdown Local History Society.
Churchdown is reputed to be one of the largest
villages in England and is situated almost mid-way
between the ancient Roman city of Gloucester
(Glevum) and the Regency spa town of Cheltenham.
Its main claim to fame is the beautiful Norman
church of St Bartholomew's, built around 1175 and
once the Parish Church of both Churchdown and
Hucclecote. The Church itself is perched nearly at
the top of Churchdown or, as it is often known,
Chosen Hill. The site is pre-Christian and is on a
mound within an Iron Age fort.
Because the history of the Village is somewhat
limited, unlike other historic towns in the area, the
Society looks outwards across Gloucestershire itself
for topics for its monthly talks, occasionally even
venturing into the bigger world outside! But
bringing us all together, members and visitors alike,
is a shared love of history and times past, learning
about how our predecessors in the area lived,
worked, entertained themselves, the things they
worried about and the things they laughed about.
If this appeals to you, a very warm welcome awaits
you. We meet on the second Thursday of each
month, except August, at 7.30 pm in the Green
Room at the Churchdown Community Centre, Parton
Road, Churchdown, Gloucester, GL3 2JH. Do
come, we'd love to meet you!
